KALLESKE TONY AND TROY KALLESKE GREENOCK
“WE DECIDED TO TAKE A TRADITIONAL, HANDMADE APPROACH TO WINEMAKING ”
Our family has been farming and growing grapes since 1853, near the village of Greenock in the north-western Barossa Valley. The vineyard is worked by our parents John and Lorraine and brother Kym, with John having tended the vineyard for more than 50 years. Small patches of Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Mataro, Petit Verdot and Durif are planted utilizing the varying and unique sites of the property. These vines have an average age of 50 years with the oldest dry-grown Shiraz dating back to 1875. The vineyard is low yielding, producing intense and complex flavoured grapes. It is also certified organic and farmed biodynamically as a result of generations of traditional viticulture and a devotion to the soil. As the seventh generation of Kalleske grapegrowers, we established a winery on the family farm in the late 1990s enabling us to produce authentic estate grown and made wines. With our high quality, naturally grown fruit we decided to take a traditional, handmade approach to winemaking. We use traditional open top fermenters and a basket press to ensure the vineyard realises its full potential in the barrel and in the bottle. While we have only been winemakers for a short time, our 150 years of grapegrowing has ensured wines of the highest quality and of national and international acclaim. It’s clear that while wines from Kalleske have been seven generations in the making, they’re certainly worth the wait.
