SPINIFEX PETER SCHELL AND MAGALI GELY KALIMNA “WE ARE BIG BELIEVERS IN THE PRIMACY OF THE VINEYARD.”  We are a husband and wife team, ex-New Zealand who came to Australia in the early nineties to study Oenology and Wine Marketing at Roseworthy Agricultural College.The Barossa and Eden Valleys have been our home ever since, and in 2001 Spinifex was established when the compulsion to 'scratch the creative itch' met the opportunity to source some great old vine Mataro grapes and the winemaking facilities to do it justice. We've spent a lot of time in the South of France, working two vintages in the Languedoc, two in Provence and one in Bordeaux. Whilst in France, we typically visit Magali's family (who up until recently were vignerons with a very long lineage in Lunel, near Montpellier) where we 'nurse our intrigue' with the wines of the south. Our focus is on producing regional wines from Mediterranean varieties - predominately reds, mainly Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz and Cinsault. We aim to make wines that display signatures of vineyard provenance and vintage, show regional typicity, and have a consistent thread of 'house style' that reflects our preferences and experiences with wine. Winemaking is simple and relatively non-interventional in approach. We are big believers in the primacy of the vineyard. Good sites with restricted yields and old vines picked at optimal maturity almost always deliver intense, textured wines of character. |
