Just 30 years agoe Government was paying Barossa grape growers a 'bounty' to pull old Shiraz vines out of the ground. Many resisted the lure of instant reward, and just ten years later the region's flagship variety had gone from the chopping block to prized fighter status. Today, Barossa stands tall on the global stage as home to some of this planet’s finest examples of Shiraz.
Grenache also took a pounding in the 1980's and came back for more of the same in the 1990’s, struggling to find favour with winemakers or wine drinkers. But Barossa grape growers, knowing full well what grows best in their vine ‘gardens’, rallied again to protect and preserve the region's finest Grenache vineyards. And with the emergence of a new generation of young, artisan winemakers excited by pure, bright and athletic vibrancy of the variety, the fortunes of Grenache began to rise.
In the last few months, the faith and belief of the Barossa wine community has been rewarded spectacularly. Bethany Wines’ 2016 Grenache was awarded Best Red and Best Wine at the 2017 Barossa Wine Show, and Turkey Flat’s 2016 Barossa Grenache won Australia’s most famous wine award, the Jimmy Watson Trophy (a first for a Grenache wine).
Barossa Grenache’s light has never shone more brightly.
Our Artisans of Barossa love Grenache and it's many forms. Discover what all the noise about Barossa Grenache is with this selction of wines from Spinifex, Schwarz Wine Co and Sons of Eden. You'll be amazed!
