Massena Twilight Path 2015
Grape Variety: 66% Primitivo 27% Mataro 7% Graciano
Background: Every Wednesday evening as the sun was setting, my family used to walk a well worn path across an empty paddock behind our house to our friends house for dinner. One night over a glass of wine, the property owner suggested we plant this bare land to vineyard so they didn't have to keep maintaining the area. At the turn of the century we planted on this site some varieties that are new to the Barossa such as Primitivo, Tannat, Saperavi and Petit Sirah as well as some old favourites Mataro and Cinsaut.
Winemaking: The 2015 vintage had the typical hot and dry lead into a hot summer, but the Dadds vineyard is always a month or more behind so it survives better than most. Showing bright fruit at an early ripeness level, the Primitivo was hand picked and around 30% by weight of whole bunch fruit is added to the ferment to add complexity and lifted aromatics. The Primitivo was aged in tank to retain its freshness, whilst the Mataro and Graciano were both aged without sulphur in seasoned barrels to soften and age and bring some complimentary secondary characters. The individual cuvee’s were then blended and bottled unfiltered and unfined.
The Wine: Weighing in at 13.5% alcohol, this blend is zippy and fresh, with the sour cherry brightness complemented by some chalky stalk tannin and a clean fresh finish. The twilight path is best enjoyed as a youthful wine to while away a balmy autumn evening.
Cellaring: Up to seven years
