Schwarz Wine Co Single Barrel Loveday Shiraz 2016
At the conclusion of each vintage, Jason Schwarz will taste through every barrel and classify the wine according to its quality and particular character. Known as the vintage classification, this annual assessment determines which barrels are blended to create each wine in the Schwarz Wine Co. portfolio. However, in rare instances, a single barrel of wine impresses the winemaker above all, presenting a compelling case to be bottled as a single barrel release
When Jason tasted his 2016 vintage reds, it was immediately clear that one particular barrel of Shiraz stood out above all others, and deserved to be bottled as a ‘Single Barrel’ release. The wine was produced from Shiraz grown by Ken Loveday in his vineyard at Moppa in the Barossa’s northwestern corner, and just 390 bottles were produced, making this an exceptionally rare release. Huon Hooke is one of Australia’s most experienced wine commentators, and gave the wine a rating of 93 points, with a cellaring suggestion of up to 20 years.
“Very deep, dark, youthful purple/red colour, with a pungent and slightly callow aroma of peppermint, plum essence and prune juice, with a massive, full-bodied palate with lashings of tannin and oak and a little bitterness at the end. It's quite essency: hyper-concentrated and formidable. The mint is not too assertive. It's a very smart wine, powerful yet elegant, and will be long-lived. Drink 2020-2037. 93 points” Huon Hooke, 10th APR 2019
