Garcon Grenache 2018 (rrp $31)
Just the third release of Garcon, a pure Grenache from vines in the Barossa (90%) and Eden Valleys (10%), our celebration of the variety from its spiritual home in Australia. The three vineyards that provided the fruit for Garcon are located in the extreme west (Moppa), north (Ebenezer) and east(Springton) of the Barossa and are 55, 90 and 160 years of age respectively. All are unirrigated and handpicked. Bright, deep ruby, blue-hued High toned, mineral edged red and blue fruits lead to a savoury aromatic core of dried herbs, game and potters clay. Pure but with a restrained rusticity. Youthful, mid-weight palate, bright spiced red cherry and ripe raspberry fruits on attached to turn to a slatey, dried spice and cherry pit close. Precise and focussed, fine sandy tannins and bright acids deliver drive and finish.
Esprit Grenache Mataro Shiraz 2018 (rrp $42)
A Grenache and Mataro blend, with a seasoning of Shiraz, sourced from very old vineyards on the northern (Ebenezer) western (Moppa)and eastern edges (Angaston Foothills) of the Barossa Valley and from Springton in Eden Valley. Vine ages range from 75 to over 150 years, all are dry grown with minimal vineyard inputs. Old vineyards grown the old way. All vineyards are hand-harvested, whole bunch inclusion averaged 40 %, the balance destemmed only. Fermented with indigenous yeasts with macerations varying from between 8-20 days. Partial pre-fermentation carbonic fermentation, limited remontage and pigeage. Elevage was undertaken on light lees in seasoned demi-muid, foudres of 1250 L capacity, and stainless steel. Wines were unracked up until final blending. Bottled without filtration 11 months after harvest.
Single Vineyard Tempranillo 2018 (rrp $31)
Vital, youthful and vigorous. Bright, punchy fruit aromatics of damson plum and mulberry sit above darker dried herb and wood smoke notes. Mid-weight palate with lively red berry and tart stone fruit flavours that mesh with nervy, bright fruit acids and light, snappy tannins. Harvested from a single, elevated vineyard in the southern Barossa foothills. Handpicked early in the season to capture lively fruit and retain natural fruit acids, selected bunches were fully destemmed prior to fermentation in a small open fermenter. The young wine was allowed to mature on its lees for six months prior to bottling without filtration.
