Spinifex Syrah 2019
When word got out last year that James Halliday had given the 2017 Spinifex Syrah a whopping 97 points (for a wine that regularly sells under $30), we were inundated with orders and any remaining stocks sold out in an hour. With the release of the 2018 Syrah from one of the great Barossa vintages comes the expectation of an even better wine, and there is no doubt this has been delivered. Typical of the year, the wine is denser, fuller and more deeply flavoured than the previous vintage.
Made from a blend of vineyards located across the eastern Barossa foothills, Moppa and Eden Valley, the wine displays plenty of deep, plush dark black fruit but without the fatness and bulk of the more traditional style. The fruit wraps around a backbone of beautifully integrated tannin from 35% whole bunch fermentation. This is as pure an expression of 2018 Barossa Shiraz that you will ever come across.
