Artisans of Barossa Grenache Project

The Artisans of Barossa Grenache Project is six wines made by six winemakers from one Barossa vineyard. An experiment designed to explore the influence of winemaking on the terroir of a single vineyard. The first vintage release in 2017 received acclaim from Australia’s most respected wine commentators.

The Grenache Project is an exciting initiative from Artisans of Barossa, representing six wines made by six winemakers from a single Barossa vineyard. Each winemaker was allocated two rows of vines, and left entirely to their own devices. Responding to a simple brief…’Make a Grenache you'd like to drink’, the Project has produced a set of wines that are testament to the outstanding vintage and an emphatic statement of the supreme qualities and deliciousness of Barossa Grenache. And whilst the character of the vineyard is evident throughout, each wine stands apart from the others, bearing the distinct imprint of the maker through style, character and flavour. For adventurous discovers of small batch Barossa winemaking, The Grenache Project is not to be missed.

 

The 2019 Grenache Project features six individual wines produced from the same Barossa Valley Grenache Vineyard. The wines are made by Peter Schell of Spinifex, John and Tim Duval of John Duval Wines, Jason Schwarz of Schwarz Wine Company, Greg and Allison Hobbs of Hobbs of Barossa, and Simon Cowham and Corey Ryan of Sons of Eden. We also welcome Phil Lehmann from Max and Me Wines as a special guest winemaker for this year’s project.

Each winemaker was allocated a single row of 6o-year-old bush vine Grenache in the Scheer Vineyard at Rowland Flat in the southern Barossa and presented with a simple brief – make a Grenache you’d like to drink. The results are outstanding and a superb reflection of the 2019 vintage considered to be another standout year for Barossa red wine. And whilst through each wine, you can taste the consistent thread of the vineyard, each stands alone as an expression of six individual approaches to making Barossa Grenache.
